A Poem About A Job You Hate
62
Sitting in the dark, the lights gone out
I move the paper from side to side.
A pile of ins a mound of outs,
The ping of emails to remain unread.
Do this and that they always say
When it’s done there’s something else.
That’s wrong and something that must change!
When will this purgatory end?
Is retirement heaven or will I miss the pain?
To get here it has taken years
Time behind me for ever more
So much that I have failed to see
Good memories few and far between
10 hours a day I slug away
Hoping for the end of day
To get back to what I love the most
A fleeting visit to the place that’s good.
Before I know it, back again!
The daily commute that eats the miles
To the place from which I’d run away.
A treadmill of grinding desperation
To move up the ladder to the summit
That takes Machiavellian skill to accomplish.
It’s not for me this corporate life
Drowning in a paper sea.
A job for life? That was the aim.
A comfortable life and happy days
Without a smile, it’s not the same.

You should have sent that in as your resignation letter. Maybe your boss would actually realise that you do fully intend to leave at the end of your notice period. Nice work mate!
